He needed a distraction. One that isn't trying to pick a physical fight with people because that never seemed to end well here. If he's already not feeling on the top of his game it's going to end even worse than usual.]

What's the point of friendships?

[There's a bit of a pause, before he tacks on:]

I don't know what's so bad about feelings. But... friendships can help you get going in life. It's having people you admire and like having fun with. And people who can really understand you and help you through troubled times. When it comes down to it, and we're at our lowest, it's friends who'll be there to help us get back on our feet. They help us not to lose sight of who we really are.

Sounds like everyone else. [Maybe there wasn't really anything interesting about it, after all.] So it's all just a glorified, emotionally tied, alliance.

I don't think it's like that. It's not like friendship's part of a war or something. It's about uniting without having to fight, and thinking about others instead of just ourselves.

Doesn't that get inconvenient? Putting others before yourselves -- or pretending you do.

It isn't always convenient, but that doesn't matter. If you can keep your friends safe or make them happy, that's what counts. It's... it's best when it's not pretend.

And if you can only pretend? Then there's no point in trying, right?

There is a point in trying. That's the only way you really know if you can only pretend in not. I do believe that everyone who's like that... can still grow and can still learn how to really value friendship.

Not all people are the same. Some people just aren't meant for that.

No, not all people are the same. But I like to think that all people are capable of change. Only you can decide what you're "meant" for.

Too bad there's some people who just aren't meant for anything at all. Guess that blows a hole into that plan, doesn't it?

Only if someone lets that happen. We all have the power over who we're going to be. I mean... even in a place like this, there's less to keep people from building new lives.

But then you go back someday, and then it's worthless isn't it? Some people are here longer than others, and then some people have to start all over again when they come back. What's the point?

Because no matter what, any friendship you'd make would still have happened. Sure, lots of things can go wrong. But I don't think that's a good enough excuse to not try at all. You have to live more in the present, like a leaf in the wind. Whatever you accomplish here, it'll still have worth as long as you've ever felt it.

Nice lecture. You should've spent that energy on someone else, though.

I spent it on the person who I thought would need it. That's all I wanted to do.
